Apple calls Christian app “offensive”

An Apple store in Chicago. Are Christian apps no longer welcome? (Dweider)

When Georgia voters overwhelmingly decided that marriage should be between one man and one woman, it was not because they wanted to insult or incite violence against gays and lesbians. On the contrary, it was because most Georgians – along with a majority of Americans whenever they have had an opportunity to vote – support a traditional view of marriage. Protecting traditional marriage is also one of the goals of the Manhattan Declaration.

An affirmation of “the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and religious liberty” is the purpose of the Manhattan Declaration. The declaration was signed in 2009 by more than 150 religious leaders of various denominations and then posted online as a petition for likeminded citizens. The declaration was drafted by evangelist and former Nixon aide Chuck Colson, Princeton law professor Robert P. George, and Beeson Divinity School dean Timothy George.

“Protecting traditional marriage is also one of the goals of the Manhattan Declaration.”

Protecting it from what? Are gays going to get their gay-germs all over it? There’s nothing to protect from. You’re trying to keep the government, which isn’t religious, and liberal religions from letting gay couples get married. Nothing will happen to your marriage as a result.

I would encourage you to read the marriage section of the Manhattan Declaration for a full answer to your question.

As it begins by quoting scripture, I reiterate that the United States is a secular country, and that there are a number of Christian denominations that have no problems with gays and lesbians getting married.

“it could be asserted with equal validity for polyamorous partnerships, polygamous households, even adult brothers, sisters, or brothers and sisters living in incestuous relationships. Should these, as a matter of equality or civil rights, be recognized as lawful marriages, and would they have no effects on other relationships? No. ”

What affect would those lawful marriages have on other relationships? Besides being ‘icky’, I see none. Assuming we’re dealing with adults acting in their own free will, I have no problem with polygamous marriages. As for incest, the amount of it that actually exists is so minuscule as to make the objection on those grounds negligible.

It quotes scripture because it is a Christian document. Marriage, however, is not a solely Christian institution. The fractures in marriage have implications for society that are numerous, long-lasting, destructive, and costly.

“Vast human experience confirms that marriage is the original and most important institution for sustaining the health, education, and welfare of all persons in a society. Where marriage is honored, and where there is a flourishing marriage culture, everyone benefits—the spouses themselves, their children, the communities and societies in which they live. Where the marriage culture begins to erode, social pathologies of every sort quickly manifest themselves. Unfortunately, we have witnessed over the course of the past several decades a serious erosion of the marriage culture in our own country. Perhaps the most telling—and alarming—indicator is the out-of-wedlock birth rate. Less than fifty years ago, it was under 5 percent. Today it is over 40 percent. Our society—and particularly its poorest and most vulnerable sectors, where the out- of-wedlock birth rate is much higher even than the national average—is paying a huge price in delinquency, drug abuse, crime, incarceration, hopelessness, and despair. Other indicators are widespread non-marital sexual cohabitation and a devastatingly high rate of divorce.”
