The trial of Kermit Gosnell may represent a turning point in the American discussion ofabortion. The story is not merely the heinous crimes committed by Gosnell and his staff; the other half of the story is the left’s almost total lack of outrage. As James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal wrote in his excellent summary of the case, the mainstream media almost totally ignored the entire case and trial until an outpouring of interest on the internet all but forced coverage of the trial onto television and into newspapers.

Bill Clinton made famous the line that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare.” Under modern Democrats, the attempt to make abortion rare, if there ever was a real attempt, has fallen by the wayside. Obamacare’s contraception mandate also forces insurance companies to include coverage for abortifacient drugs and President Obama’s budget increased federal funding for mega-provider of abortion Planned Parenthood. While Gosnell was on trial, President Obama became the first president to speak to Planned Parenthood, telling the group “as long as we’ve got to fight to protect a woman’s right to make her own choices about her own health, I want you to know that you’ve also got a President who’s going to be right there with you fighting every step of the way” and “God bless you” according to Politico.

Pat Robertson wants legal pot

March 9, 2012

Evangelical leader Pat Robertson shocked the nation recently when he advocated the legalization of marijuana.  In an interview with the N.Y. Times, Robertson said, “I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol.  I’ve never used marijuana and I don’t intend to, but it’s just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn’t succeeded.”

Robertson said that his views on legalization formed over time as he came to realize that the U.S. “has gone overboard on this concept of being tough on crime.”  He believes that legalization of marijuana would be a way to reduce social and financial costs of the drug war as well as reducing rates of incarceration.

Why Ron Paul can’t win

November 17, 2011

Ron Paul is a frequent winner of straw polls and has a loyal following among libertarians. In spite of winning these polls, Paul has no chance of winning the Republican nomination. This is not because of a Republican or media (or Bilderberger or Illuminati or any other) conspiracy. The reason lies in Paul’s political beliefs and the nature of the straw polls that he wins.

Paul, a Republican congressman representing a Texas house district, is not a normal Republican. Between terms in Congress as a Republican, he ran for president as a Libertarian Party candidate. Even today, his platform is starkly different than those of other Republicans.

Ga. lawmakers consider expanded gun rights, bath salt ban

February 17, 2011

A new bill in the Georgia Senate proposes to expand the locations where holders of a Georgia Firearms License can carry weapons. Currently, it is illegal to carry a gun in government buildings, courthouses, jails or prisons, churches, bars (unless permission is granted by the owner), mental health facilities, nuclear power facilities, and within 150 feet of polling places. The new bill, SB 98, would amend the current law to make it illegal to carry weapons in prisons, jails, detention centers, courthouses, school safety zones, and nuclear power facilities. The new bill is proposed by Sen. Barry Loudermilk of the 52nd district, which includes Rome and Calhoun.
