Meet the candidates: Ron Paul

May 27, 2011

Rep. Ron Paul (US Congress)

Judging by the number of “Ron Paul for President” signs in the Atlanta area in 2008, Congressman Ron Paul had some of the most loyal and motivated supporters of any candidate in the 2008 presidential primaries. Sadly for Rep. Paul and his supporters, that devotion did not translate into widespread appeal. Rep. Paul finished fourth in the Georgia primary with only 2.9 percent of the vote. It wasn’t much better in other states. Paul failed to win a single primary, although he did finish second a number of times.

Now Ron Paul is running for president again. After four years of Barack Obama’s record-setting spending, Paul’s message of fiscal restraint may be more attractive to recession-weary Americans. Nevertheless, a RealClearPolitics average of polls from April and May 2011 shows Paul in sixth place with 7.9 percent. He trails Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, and Newt Gingrich respectively. He leads Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann, Tim Pawlenty, and Mitch Daniels. Paul might get a slight bump from the recent withdrawals of Huckabee, Trump, and Daniels.

Conservatives are from Mars, liberals are from Venus

May 26, 2011

Venus (Chosovi/Wikimedia Commons)

A well known relationship book a few years posited the obvious truth that men and women thought and communicated differently. The same seems to be true of conservatives and liberals.

While there are exceptions to every rule, it seems that conservatives are more logical and rational while liberals tend to be more emotional and spontaneous. This is evident from frequently heard charge that conservatives are heartless or lack compassion, while liberals are often referred to as “bleeding hearts.”

Oklahoma OKs Health Care Compact in fight against Obamacare

May 20, 2011

Gov. Mary Fallin

Oklahoma has become the second state to sign the Health Care Compact into law according to a press release from the Health Care Compact Alliance. Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin signed the bill into law on May 18. Georgia became the first state to enact the Health Care Compact on April 20 when Governor Nathan Deal signed Georgia’s version of the compact.

The interstate compact would supersede federal health care laws and allow states to enact their own laws on the subject when it becomes effective. Under the terms of the compact, now that two states have passed the compact legislation, the Health Care Compact will become effective when Congress gives its consent.

Save the date: World to end Saturday

May 18, 2011

Armageddon by Nicholas Roerich (public domain)

The Georgia rock band REM famously sang, “It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.” However, since the song was released in 1987 the world has noticeably continued to exist. Presumably REM feels fine about that too.

In recent weeks though, a Christian group has made news with the claim that the world as we know it will end this Saturday, May 21, with the return of Jesus Christ. The group’s claim has spawned theological discussions of Christian eschatology throughout the mainstream news and entertainment media, some serious, most not. There is even an event page on Facebook for “Post Rapture Looting” and a group of atheists offering to care for the pets of raptured Christians… for a fee of course.

Russia beams propaganda to US hotel rooms

May 17, 2011

RT.com logo (Fair Use)

Before the breakup of the Soviet Union, Pravda was synonymous with laughable propaganda and cover-ups. The Communist Party newspaper was akin to “Baghdad Bob,” the Iraqi Information Minister who denied that Saddam’s regime was collapsing even as American tanks rolled through the streets of Baghdad. Soviet-era Russian journalism is perhaps best exemplified by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster in which the Soviet regime delayed the announcement of the accident for two days while radiation spread around the world.

Today, rather than being confined to Eastern European tabloids, Russian propaganda is beamed directly into American homes via the cable news channel, RT. RT was previously known as Russia Today and was started in 2005. The channel broadcasts in English, Arabic, Spanish, and, of course, Russian. RT is available around the world in over 100 countries, including the United States. RT America has bureaus in Washington, New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

Deal blocks Fox Five from bill signing

May 15, 2011

Nathan Deal

A Fox Five news crew with Justin Gray was banned from attending a public ceremony where Gov. Nathan Deal was to sign a new immigration bill into law yesterday. In a video on myfoxatlanta.com, Georgia State Troopers can be seen barring the news crew from the press conference.

An unidentified man, presumably an aide to the governor, can be seen on the video telling Mr. Gray that Fox Five will not be allowed in “until someone apologizes for telling lies about us.”

The Sears Tower in Chicago is now the Willis Tower.

Sears Holdings, the parent company of K-Mart and Sears Roebuck, announced this week that it is considering a move from its current corporate headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill. to Georgia reports Chicagobreakingbusiness.com. Other states also being considered as the new headquarters of Sears include New Jersey, Ohio, North and South Carolina, and Texas.

The move comes four months after Illinois legislators voted a massive tax increase package into law. According to the N.Y. Times, Illinois tax corporate tax rates increased from 4.8 percent to seven percent under the new law. This is an increase of 68 percent. Additionally, individual income taxes in Illinois also sharply increased from three to five percent.

Churches aid Ga. tornado victims

May 10, 2011

When super cell thunderstorms and tornadoes barreled across the south on April 27, it left a swath of damage across Alabama and Georgia that will take years to repair. Local churches have stepped in to minister to the people affected by the storms and who lost homes, possessions and loved ones.

A Disaster Relief team from Peachtree Community Church in Villa Rica traveled to Adairsville, Ga. on May 9 to assist local residents. The group first traveled to NorthPointe Church in Adairsville which has become a central location for relief efforts in the area. The church is home to a local food bank and has built upon that ministry to bring in more food to displaced residents. The church is also accepting clothing donations and has essentially set up on clothing store in the church gym that is free to those in need. Other household items and toys for children are also available.

Is Osama bin Laden really dead?

May 5, 2011

US Navy SEALs (DOD)

In the days since Osama bin Laden’s death was announced, doubts have begun to emerge about whether bin Laden was really killed by US Navy SEALs in the May 1 raid on his home in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Some of the doubts are predictable, coming from Arab nations where the people have been conditioned by their leaders to question anything the US says or conspiracy theorists who believe that nothing is as it seems. Let us once again don our tinfoil hats to examine the various conspiracy theories surrounding Osama bin Laden’s death.

Some critics cite the numerous changes to reported details of the raid. There are questions about whether bin Laden was armed, whether his daughter or wife was shot trying to defend him, and whether he was given the chance to surrender. This type of confusion is typical of the heat of battle and even has a name: “the fog of war.” In almost every military action, it takes time to sort out the details.

Outflanking Obamacare with the Health Care Compact

May 4, 2011

A year after Obama signed his health care reform into law, most Americans still favor its repeal.

President George W. Bush famously claimed to be “the decider” when it came to military matters. Last year, President Obama made his case to the American people that the federal government should be the decider when it comes their health care. Unfortunately for President Obama, a majority of the people don’t buy his argument. In a recent Rasmussen poll, Americans favor repeal of the health care reform law by a margin of 53 to 40 percent.

In the November 2010 elections, Republicans won a majority of seats in the house, but Democrats still hold a majority in the senate. Republicans can pass a repeal law in the house (and did so as one of their first acts), but the bill cannot pass the senate. The result is a stalemate as the lawsuits challenging the law wind their way through the federal court system.
